Playlist: What Was On Your Walkman?
****EDITOR'S PICK
YOU ALL REMEMBER THE WALKMAN DON'T YOU? THE ANCIENT ANCESTOR OF THE IPOD?! SURE IT MAY HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED IN 1979- BUT REALLY SAW IT'S PEAK OF POPULARITY IN THE YEARS FROM 1984 TO 1987. FINALLY THE PHRASE "DANCING TO HIS OWN DRUMMER" LIVED UP TO THE HYPE! I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO COUNT HOW MANY FAMILY BRAWLS WERE AVERTED THANKS TO A BAG OF CASSETTES AND SONY'S MIRACLE DEVICE. MY MOTHER STILL REFERS TO THESE BLISSFUL YEARS AS THE "TCCHHH TCCHH" ERA- MY BROTHER, SISTER, AND I WOULD PILE IN THE BACK SEAT, PUT ON OUR HEADPHONES, AND OUR PERSONAL SOUNDTRACKS WOULD DROWN OUT ANY CONVERSATION HEHEHE! I REMEMBER ONE TRIP- A NINE HOUR DRIVE FROM BANGOR, MAINE TO NEW YORK CITY TO VISIT RELATIVES- AND MY STUPID BABY BROTHER DIDN'T PACK SPARE BATTERIES!! MY WALKMAN WAS SO TOP OF THE LINE THAT I COULD CRANK GWEN GUTHRIE TO DROWN HIM OUT AND STILL NOT HAVE ANY DISTORTION!! OH THE PAINED LOOK ON HIS FACE LISTENING TO MY MOTHER SHARE HER THOUGHTS ON EVERY SIGN, TREE, AND CAR WE PASSED HEHEHEHE! THE MIX I HAVE CHOSEN TO REPRESENT THOSE YEARS IS MADE UP OF SONGS THAT I PLAYED SOOOOOOO MUCH- THAT NOW, OVER TWENTY YEARS LATER- YOU PLAY ANY ONE OF THEM AND I CHIME RIGHT IN NOT MISSING A BEAT- DAMN THOSE WERE THE DAYS!! ENJOY!

Thank Goodness I could hear Gwen Guthrie on the radio.
I don't know what I would have done otherwise.
I had as much English music as I could afford on the walkman back in the day...endless repeated listenings of ABC and New Order and Ultravox and Spandau Ballet and Sade and Talk Talk and Aztec Camera and....well, I could go on and on and on... that's what kept me going on the endless tedious trips down the bayou.
